Joining the Polk-Des Moines Taxpayers Association makes you a direct recipient of our research and new ideas about taxes.  Polk County receives 53% of its revenue from local property taxes.  Cities receive 40% of their revenues from property taxes.  School Districts obtain 45% of their revenue from property taxes.  With cutbacks at the State and Federal level, property taxes become an even more important component of local spending.
